About The Benjamin Banneker Association, Inc.

The Benjamin Banneker Association, an equity affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), is dedicated to empowering Black children by actively pursuing effective solutions to the challenges hindering their access to equal opportunities in mathematics education and achievement. Since our founding in 1986, our organization has been dedicated to mathematics education advocacy, establishing a presence for leadership, and professional development to support teachers in leveling the playing field for mathematics learning of the highest quality for African-American students.

Our Mission

The Benjamin Banneker Association, an equity affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), is committed to supporting its members to empower Black children by actively pursuing effective solutions to the challenges hindering their access to equal opportunities in mathematics education and achievement.

Our Vision

The vision of the Benjamin Banneker Association is that all Black children have access to the highest quality mathematics education that empowers them to gain the self-confidence, joy, and resilience needed to succeed in mathematics and to transform themselves and their communities.

Our Signature Initiatives 

     Banneker Math  Teacher Collective                  (BMTC)

The Banneker Math Teacher Collective creates supportive spaces of belonging for teachers committed to serving Black math students, empowering them to cultivate classrooms where those students thrive as confident and competent doers of mathematics.

         Mathematical                      Heritage
          & Brilliance                  Initiative (MHBI)

The mission of the Mathematical Heritage & Brilliance Initiative is to honor the rich cultural heritage of Black mathematical brilliance throughout history and around the world, ensuring that Black students see themselves as capable mathematicians and problem-solvers.
