Committees

BBA is seeking talented individuals to join our committees. Our current chairs are dedicated to our mission and are eager to welcome new members to the team.

Constitution and By-Laws

The Constitution and By-Laws Revision Committee conducts a thorough review of The Association's organizational structure, processes, and procedures, gathers input to assess the necessity for changes in the Constitution, By-Laws, and Policy Manual, and proposes any required revisions to the Board of Directors and the membership in accordance with The Association's Constitution.

This committee's meeting time is the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7 pm Eastern.

Professional Learning Committee

The Professional Learning Committee creates position papers, workshops, and seminars and collaborates with others to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics for Black students.

This committee's meeting time is the 3rd Saturday of each month from 12:00 - 1:00 pm Eastern, 9:00am-10am pst

Finance Committee

The Finance/Fundraising committee of BBA is responsible for supporting the management of the organization's financial resources, budgeting, and implementing fundraising strategies to secure necessary funds for its educational programs and initiatives.

 

This committee meets on the 4th Monday of every month at 8PM - 8:45 PM Eastern.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is responsible for efforts to recruit and retain members, and for maintaining the membership management database.


This committee's meeting time is the first Saturday of each month at 1 pm Eastern.

Affiliates Committee

The Affiliates Committee fosters partnerships with organizations aligned to the mission of the Benjamin Banneker Association, including NCTM, NCSM, NABSE, and other equity-focused groups. The committee serves as a liaison by sharing opportunities, supporting representation, and advising the Board on strategic partnerships that advance equity in mathematics education for Black learners.

Nominations & Elections Committee

The Nominations and Elections Committee is responsible for gathering nominations, creating candidate slates, and conducting BBA elections.

Program & Awards Committee (in development)

The Programs and Awards Committee plans and coordinates key Benjamin Banneker Association events, including the BBA Teacher Reception at the NCTM Annual Conference, and collaborates on promotion and engagement. The committee also leads the recognition of exemplary mathematics teachers of Black students through awards such as BEAM and the William Greer Scholarship, including managing nominations, reviewing applications, and recommending awardees to the Board, while supporting the Student Awards Program.

Publications & Publicity Committee

The Publications and Publicity Committee coordinates the publication of BBA’s peer-reviewed journal, The Lighthouse Almanac, and promotes awareness of the organization’s activities through the website, email marketing, and social media. 

 

This committee's meeting time is the 4th Monday of each month from 8 pm - 9 pm Eastern.

Student Engagement Committee

The Student Engagement Committee creates meaningful experiences that center student voice, identity, and joy in mathematics for the Benjamin Banneker Association. The committee leads initiatives such as Benjamin Banneker birthday celebrations and advances the Black Heritage Initiative through Math Rooms and Open-Play Rooms, fostering spaces where Black learners experience belonging, brilliance, and possibility in mathematics.
